What to expect
Lesson Format
Lessons are offered in-person or online via ZOOM. All students, regardless of doing online or in-person lessons, must be able to recognize and write their letters A-G and numbers 1-5. In order to be eligible for online piano lessons, the student must be age 6+ and have an 88-key piano at home and a working metronome.
Lesson Frequency
Lessons occur on a weekly basis to ensure progress is made. Every student has a specific time slot designated for them every week. If you cannot make your lesson you must cancel at least 24 hours in advance. All missed lessons that are cancelled in advance will be rescheduled. If the student and teacher cannot find a time to reschedule, payment for that lesson will transfer to the next month.
We will occasionally accommodate students who have a busy schedule and provide bi-monthly lessons, provided that they do hour lessons.
Practicing
When we are learning something new, it is crucial we do it frequently and consistently if we want it to improve. Learning how to play an instrument is like learning a new language, and we all know how difficult that can be if we do not practice.
The following are practice recommendations:
Students age 4-6 practice 5 days a week for at least 15 minutes.
Students age 7-9 practice 5 days a week for at least 20 minutes.
Students age 10-12 practice 5 days a week for at least 30 minutes.
Students age 13-15 practice 5 days a week for at least 45 minutes.
Students age 16+ practice 5 days a week for at least 60 minutes.
*Please keep in mind, this is a general guideline and will vary depending on the student's cognitive abilities, how long they have been in piano lessons, and their goals*
Recitals
Every year, Fermata Music hosts two recitals: a Holiday Recital and a Spring Recital. In December, we travel to local nursing and retirement homes to perform holiday music for the residents. In the Spring, we hold a recital at the University of Windsor School of Creative Arts where the students showcase their most difficult pieces learned that year on a grand piano!
Competitions and Exams
Every year we prepare a number of students for practical and theory exams with the Royal Conservatory of Music and we have a select number of students compete in the Kiwanis Music Festival every year. Participation in competitions and exams is not required, but strongly encouraged to be experienced at least once.
